Occupational Health and Safety
IMPORTANT: Watch this safety message- it could save a life.
Our members rate health and safety alongside wages and job security as the three most important priorities of the CFMEU.
Without your health, nothing else matters. Above all else, we want our members to come home safely. Everyday!
Statistics don't tell the whole story.
- Each year around the world 2 million workers die in workplace related accidents
- Approximately 1.2 million suffer injuries
- More than 160 million people fall ill each year to due unsafe, unhealthy or unsustainable work and workplaces.
Statistics don't take into account the grief and hardship endured by those family members and friends affected by the death of a loved one. Not to mention the cost to the National ecnonomy, estimated to around $20 Billion annually.
We do our best, Government can do more.
Unions are out there on the coal face everyday trying to improve health and safety standards and conditions. However, government can do lot a more by investing increased funds into work-safe programs and inspectorate resources.
Accident or industrial manslaughter? Governments need to legislate to ensure harsher penalties against employers, especially where accidents due to outright negligence results in the death or serious injury of workers.
Is your job or work site safe?
If you have any concerns or suspicions about the health and safety standards of your worksite, please report it to your Union Organiser or contact the union office on (08) 9221 1055.
